Awards and Bursaries

Application information for the 2010 awards and bursaries will be posted in late July.  A history of past awards winners follows the awards descriptions.

Jerry Gerow Nurse Practitioner Leadership Award
Established in 2005, NPAO's most prestigious award recongnizes the significant contributions of Jerry Gerow to the profession as a pioneer in NP practice in Ontario and to the Association as one of the founding members.  NPAO provides a $1500 award to a member who has demonstrated exceptional leadership to the Association and in NP practice.  Funding is intended to support post-graduate education or attendance at a national or international nursing conference.  Previous winners include Theresa Agnew, Colleen Kennelly, Tina Hurlock-Chorostecki and Joanne Opsteen.
2009 Recipient -  Michelle Acorn.

NPAO Member Bursary
As a result of the success of NPAOs Annual NP Conference, NPAO offers a minimum of four bursaries of $1000 to members of NPAO who are pursuing further education at the undergraduate, graduate or post-graduate level.
2009 Recipients - Maureen Loft, Nicole Niessner, Treva Job, Mary Vanden Neucker 

Whitehall Robins Bursary
Since 2003, Whitehall Robins has supported Nurse Practitioners in Ontario through a bursary program of two $1500 awards to NPAO members. The purpose of these bursaries is to provide support for Nurse Practitioners intending to practice in community programs throughout the province.

Huronia Nurse Practitioner Network Bursary
NPAOs newest award is supported by the Huronia NP Network. As a result of the success of HNPNs Annual Inter-Professional Conference, and in support of their nurse practitioner colleagues, HNPN is offering a $1500 bursary to a NPAO member to support their continuing education. Preference will be given to a member of the HNPN but all members are encouraged to apply. Established in 2000, HNPN is a group of over 30 local NPs who work in a variety of primary and acute care settings and support inter-professional practice, education and evidence based practice.
2009 Recipient - Catherine Simpson

Pfizer Award for Clinical Excellence (PACE)
Initiated in 2005, the Pfizer Award of Clinical Excellence recognizes two NPAO members who demonstrate best practice and promote cardiovascular care and wellness or pain and symptom management in Ontario.  Grants of $2500 are awarded to two members, one NP-PHC and one NP or Advanced Practice Nurse working in an Adult or Paediatrics specialty.  The award supports the professional and scholarly development and personal growth of the recipients.
2009 Recipients - Claudia Marinao, Lia Kutzscher

Bayer Award for Excellence in Women's Health
For the forth year, Bayer provides a grant of $1500 to recognize and support a member of NPAO who displays excellence in the delivery of care to women in Ontario.  The award recognizes best practice in care delivery, innovation in care planning and a commitment to promoting health and wellness.  The award will be used to support the professional and scholarly development and personal growth of the Nurse Practitioner.

AstraZeneca Award for Innovation in Chronic Disease Management

Chronic diseases such as COPD, heart disease, diabetes, dementia and asthma are a huge burden on individuals, families and communities. The goal of the Innovation in Chronic Disease Management (ICDM) is to develop strategies to optimize the management of chronic disease and improve quality of life.  A grant of $5,000 is available to a member of NPAO to support implementation an innovative project that will influence how CDM is integrated into their practice setting or community/region. Initiatives that support the development, implementation or integration of tools, resources or strategies to enhance patient self-management or interprofessional care are encouraged. The project must be completed by November 1, 2009 and the award recipient is expected to participate in at least one dissemination strategy.
