CNO Registration Committee Update

The Registration Committee of CNO has issued a decision in regard to the review of the University of Western Ontario's MScN (Advanced Nursing Practice) and the Post Masters Tertiary Care Nurse Practitioner: These programs met one of the two key review criteria:

The Canadian NP Core Competencies are embedded in the curriculum. This was one of the criteria in the review process.

The minimum requirement 600 hours of practice was not met.

Therefore both programs are not equivalent for registration in either the NP-Adult or NP-Pediatrics specialty on the basis of insufficient clinical hours.

However, the good news is that the Registration Committee has approved an administrative guideline giving CNO staff the authority to approve these two programs as equivalent if the graduates of these programs had a minimum of 130 hours of practice in an advanced practice patient care role post-graduation. This will make them eligible to meet other non-exemptible registration requirements such as writing the regulatory examination.

Important Notice: Graduates of these programs need to contact the registration department of the CNO directly and complete the application form and provide the required information regarding clinical hours. (EC) Exam Prep - Attention APNs

NPAO is excited to have the opportunity to provide a variety of tools and resources to support those Advanced Practice Nurses who plan on writing the Adult or Paediatric Extended Class examinations. Earlier this year, NPAO partnered with RNAO, University of Toronto Lawrence Bloomberg School of Nursing and the University of Western Ontario School of Nursing to facilitate the delivery of exam prep programs for any advanced nurse practitioner or NP student interested in taking the exam. Once the evaluations of these courses is completed, decisions will be made regarding similar programs for the fall. Watch this website and News You Can Use emails for additional information and updates! If you are not a member of NPAO please email info@npao.org and we will provide you with additional information.

This program is available to anyone interested in writing the NP Adult or Paediatric examinations. You do not have to be an NPAO member to register for these programs.
