Position Statements / Submissions / Papers

NPAO is pleased to provide a copy of the NP Integration Task Team Report (March 2007).  This project was commissioned by Minister Smitherman in November 2005 to review, prioritize, implement, or advise on the implementation of the recommendations of Nurse PractitionThe Intergration of Primary Health Care into the Province of Ontario report.  Establishing the NP Task Team was a significant marker of the Minister's commitment to integrating this role into the Ontario health system. NPAO is monitoring progress on implementation.

Accord Projects

Despite almost forty years of experience, Nurse Practitioners remain a relatively recent addition to the health care providers available to Ontarians.  They perform some of the same functions as physicians  (ordering some medications and diagnostic tests) and work throughout the health care system in communities, hospitals and other settings, to improve timeliness and access to treatment and care. Since introduction of the role, NPAO has been working with other stakeholders to determine how to use the NP role to the best advantage for patients and families. This project brought together physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, regulators, leaders and other practitioners to develop ways in which the role can be best used to promote heath care services in Ontario. Through a series of meetings broad communication strategies were created on some key issues to help nurse practitioners be better able to perform the role they are educated to do.

Accord Project Briefing Paper

In addition an 11 minute video was developed to explain the NP role from the perspective of patients, nursing leaders, and nurse practitioners.  Copies of the DVD can be obtained by contacting info@npao.org or you can view the video on our website. Click to view video
