Our small northern community of Kapuskasing has significantly reduced resources when it comes to points of access for primary care. This has traditionally resulted in excess use of emergency room resources for primary care access, longer emergency care wait time and poor standardized Follow-up for patients. Having an NP available in the emergency department as allowed for improved access for these patients while they wait for primary care. Additionally it has improved wait times in the emergency department and has decreased hospital admissions for the geriatric population as well as contributed to better patient outcomes with regard to primary care access overall in our community.
