Job Description

Scope of Position: To provide clinical, counselling and referral services within the scope and functions of a Nurse Practitioner (Registered Nurse – Extended Class) as mandated by the sexual health protocol and OPHS standards (2008) or as current, including sexual health and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)/Blood Borne Infections (BBIs). Position Description:
  • Perform health assessments for clients utilizing Sexual Health clinical services for contraception, pregnancy counselling and/or STIs/BBIs.
  • Order lab tests and/or ultrasounds required to provide contraceptive and STI/BBI services to clients.
  • Communicate to the client a diagnosis identified as the cause of symptoms, a disease or disorder identified from the health history, findings of a health examination or the results of any laboratory tests or other tests performed.
  • Determine needs for clients including prescribing drugs for contraception and treatment of STIs.
  • Seek consultation with a physician when a diagnosis and/or treatment plan is unclear or beyond the scope of the Nurse Practitioner.
  • To maintain computerized and/or hard copy records reports and statistics necessary for program function and evaluation.
  • To ensure professional development through self-directed learning, self-evaluation and collaborative goal setting. To act as a preceptor for students assigned to programs for clinical experience and/or observation of program activities.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned including participating in emergency response.
  • To act as a lead and support nursing practice issues.
  • To develop and partner with community organizations and primary care.

Job Requirements

Knowledge and Experience:
  • Current certificate of Competence and Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario – Registered Nurse – Extended Class.
  • University Degree in Nursing, which includes public health preparation
  • Master of Nursing degree preferred
  • At least 2 years in public/community health with a minimum of two years’ experience in a clinical setting
Skills and Abilities:
  • Proven counselling, assessment, examination and treatment, interpersonal, communication (both oral and written), planning and evaluation, and time-management and organizational skills.
  • Proven ability to work in an inter-disciplinary team environment.
  • Contribute to the identification and prioritization of areas for improvement within the six dimensions of quality (safe, effective, efficient, timely, person-centred and equitable).
  • Engage with colleagues in a systematic approach to quality improvement, including the definition of the purpose and scope; development, testing and implementation of change ideas; and measurement of reach and impact.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle as travel is required.
  • Computer expertise in corporate standard software (Microsoft office) and department specific software to data search and entry and create and modify word processed documents.
  • Must be aware of safe work practises as they relate to job responsibilities and work environment, and have the basic understanding of the Occupational health and safety act
