Unit Summary
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at McMaster Children’s Hospital is comprised of a Level III NICU, a Level IIc nursery and a neonatal transport team, providing medical and surgical care to neonates and their families and serving a broad geographic area within southern Ontario. The interdisciplinary team provides family-centered care with a strong focus on evidence-based best practice and continuous quality improvement. McMaster NICU is actively involved in a number of collaborative quality improvement initiatives provincially, nationally and internationally.

Position Summary
The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP)- is part of a dynamic care team that includes Neonatologists, Physician Assistants, and Neonatal Fellows. This triad works seamlessly with an extended interdisciplinary team to diagnose and treat all disorders affecting critically ill and convalescing newborns. In addition to direct clinical care, the NNP functions fully in the other domains of practice embedded in the role, including education, research, quality improvement, and leadership. The NNP is eligible for Clinical Cross Appointment with the Faculty of Nursing at McMaster University. The NNP is considered a highly respected leader and key member of the Interprofessional team at MCH. With over two decades of service, the Neonatal Nurse Practitioner team was recognized for their innovation and care with the Hospital’s distinguished Cornerstone of Care Award.

Job Requirements

Qualifications
 Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse in the Extended Class-Pediatrics [RN(EC)-Ped]
 Advanced preparation at the Masters level with specialized training and successful completion of an internship in the NICU
 Completion of a graduate level Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Program
 Current NRP Certification
 Current BCLS Certification
 Minimum 2 years experience in an NICU
 Advanced knowledge of pre-term and full-term infant pathophysiology
 Knowledge of the Regulated Health Professionals Act
 Knowledge of family dynamics as it relates to role change with respect to the birth process crisis/stress situation and death and dying
 Knowledge and skill to operate the highly specialized pieces of equipment in the NICU and the ability to trouble shoot and respond appropriately when problems arise
 Critical analysis and problem-solving skills to formulate medical and nursing diagnosis

Proficiency in both Official Languages would be an asset.
