Nurse Practitioner – Mental Health Pay Band: $50.34-$61.53 per hour (includes benefits and HOOPP pension) Hours of Work: Full-Time Position, Rotating Shifts including evenings and weekends Union: ONA Location: Kingston General Hospital and Hotel Dieu Hospital Site PRIMARY FUNCTION The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a Registered Nurse (RN) in the Extended Class with additional educational preparation and experience, who possesses and demonstrates the competencies to autonomously diagnose, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe pharmaceuticals and perform specific procedures within their legislated scope of practice. Reporting to the Program Operational Director, the NP works in an extended nursing role demonstrating a high level of autonomy and expert skill in order to formulate clinical decisions, appropriately manage acute illness and promote wellness within clinical Mental Health. The NP explicitly consults the inter-professional team where care is required outside of the NP scope of practice and/or not covered by a Medical Directive. The NP Mental Health will have patient care responsibilities on the inpatient unit, critical care, emergency room, urgent care clinic, operating room and outpatient clinics. Within this role, the NP is accountable for contributing to the delivery of the Kingston Health Sciences Centre strategy and must demonstrate an awareness of and be responsible for actively promoting and supporting patient-and-family-centered care and engagement. RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES INCLUDE: Clinical Domain: The NP will provide direct, comprehensive clinical care to Mental Health patients, particularly those with critical care needs. The provision of clinical care to patients and their families comprises an essential component of the NP role. The NP works autonomously to diagnose, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe pharmaceuticals and perform procedures within the legislated scope of practice and where required, a defined collaborative practice agreement, to provide care to a defined population. The NP will collaborate with the interprofessional team to support the care of the patient and family. The position requires rotating and weekend shifts as first call for hospital consultations, transfer and inpatient care.

Requirements

• Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as Registered Nurse in the Extended Class with the specialty class of Adult. With preference for acute care Nurse Practitioner Program. • Masters of Science (Nursing) or a Masters in a relevant discipline • Membership with a professional organization such as CNA, RNAO or NPAO • Each NP maintains and continually improves his/her competence by participating in the College of Nurses of Ontario’s Quality Assurance requirements • CNA Specialty in area of primary focus (an asset). • Minimum 2-3 years of recent nursing experience with a focused Mental Health background highly desirable. • Demonstrated understanding of the Ontario Mental Health Act. • Demonstrated ability to educate staff, patients and families • Demonstrated leadership skills within the interprofessional care team • Excellent interpersonal, communication, presentation and documentation skills • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively with all team members • Evidence of strong mentoring, teaching, team building, change leadership, organizational and prioritization skills, with the ability to work well in stressful situations • Demonstrated ability to effectively deal with conflict situations and proactively and effectively resolve issues impacting on quality and continuity of care • Exceptional time management, organizational and prioritization skills • Demonstrated ability to problem solve and make evidence based decisions • Demonstrated critical thinking and decision making skills • Demonstrated ability to interpret/participate in research • Demonstrated knowledge of computer database, data analysis and presentation packages required • Valid Driver’s License required • Proven ability to attend work regularly. • Satisfactory criminal reference check required.
