November 7, 2025 (TORONTO, ON) — The Nurse Practitioners’ Association of Ontario (NPAO) commends the Ontario government for its ongoing commitment to healthcare investments as outlined in the 2025 Fall Economic Statement, but flags the ongoing and critical need for funding models, harmonized compensation, and respectful remuneration packages, that fully recognize the expanding role and impact of Nurse Practitioners (NPs) in Ontario. As the province continues to face significant healthcare challenges, NPs remain at the forefront of delivering comprehensive, patient-centered care.
“NPs are integral to addressing Ontario’s healthcare needs, providing high-quality care in communities across the province,” said Dr. NP Michelle Acorn, CEO of NPAO. “While we are encouraged by the government’s continued investment in healthcare, we strongly emphasize the importance of ensuring funding models and remuneration for NPs evolve to reflect their expanded scope of practice, system leadership, and their vital contributions to the health and well-being of Ontarians.”
The NPAO emphasizes that strategic investments must include the development of flexible funding models that enable NPs to practice to their full scope. It is further essential that remuneration frameworks keep pace with these increased responsibilities and the care NPs provide. Supporting Ontario’s healthcare professionals directly supports Ontario’s patients.
“Our members are ready and able to do more to serve Ontarians, but we need funding structures that support innovation and recognize the value NPs bring to the healthcare system,” emphasized NP Marie Greer-King, President of NPAO. “Appropriate remuneration that reflects our expanded scope of work is not just about fairness—it’s about ensuring we can recruit and retain the skilled professionals needed to meet the healthcare demands of our province.”
NPAO calls on the provincial government to prioritize:
- Flexible funding models that support diverse practice environments and timely, high-quality care delivery;
- Competitive remuneration that reflects the expanded scope of practice, education, and experience of NPs;
- Elevating NPs as leaders to drive system improvements, patient outcomes, and organizational effectiveness and;
- Enhancing data collection and analysis of NP services to better understand utilization, contributions, and outcomes.
NPAO remains committed to continuing to work with the provincial government to drive investments, develop policies, and deliver results that will support NPs in supporting Ontarians.
