NPAO Responds to 2025 Auditor General Report

The Nurse Practitioners’ Association of Ontario (NPAO) acknowledges the findings of the Auditor General’s December 2025 report, which reveals systemic challenges that underscore the urgent need for comprehensive healthcare system reform. This reform cannot be achieved without meaningful consultation with all healthcare professionals, including Nurse Practitioners (NPs).

The identified issues with respect to existing billing models under OHIP represent persistent challenges that demand collaborative, system-wide solutions. Meaningful progress requires bringing all health professionals to the table for transparent consultation on funding model reform, and developing equitable billing structures that include NPs and better support interprofessional care delivery. As healthcare leaders, NPs offer significant value to Ontario’s healthcare system, including, but not limited to, improved access to care and cost-effective care delivery.

Current funding models do not adequately support NP integration into the healthcare system, creating inefficiencies and limiting access to care for Ontarians. NPAO is committed to working with the provincial government to develop equitable funding models that address these concerns while ensuring all Ontarians receive timely, high-quality care. NPs have the experience and the expertise to guide these discussions and develop policy that is effective, evidence-based, and patient-centred.
