Community-based care requires dedication and complex capacities, but it doesn’t always require the specialization of a doctor. Nurse practitioner Michelle Acorn knows this first hand, as head of Ontario’s first nurse practitioner-led hospital, Lakeridge Health in Whitby, Ontario. I spoke to her about her work, the evolution of the nurse practitioner’s role in the Ontario health care system and what’s next for NPs as the province continues to realign who delivers what kinds of care in the province.
