Questionnaire Response: 2014 NPAO Election Survey
Will you commit to maintain and build on the successful Nurse Practitioner Led Clinic model by expanding access to NPLCs in communities where there is need?
Ontario Liberals are proud of the investments in 25 new Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinics which will bring primary care closer to people.
The Ontario Liberal plan for building a sustainable public health care system is delivering the right care, at the right time, in the right place. To support this transformation, our party will provide additional funding of $300 million over 10 years to help shift care from hospitals to community settings and to ensure adequate infrastructure capacity in the health care sector. This includes the creation of a dedicated Community Infrastructure Renewal Fund that would help community organizations such as, Public Health Units, Family Health Teams and Nurse Practitioner‐ Led Clinics. This dedicated fund will give community partners the capital support needed to provide Ontarians with more health care options.
Will you commit to addressing the NP recruitment and retention crisis through targeted investments in community primary care?
Yes.
Will you commit to improve the care of residents in long term care by ensuring that there is at least one NP for every 150 residents in Long-Term Care?
In our Budget – which the NDP refused to support – we committed to hiring 75 Nurse Practitioners in our LTC homes to prevent unnecessary ambulance use, to prevent injuries, and to improve resident care. If returned to government, we will move swiftly to implement this commitment.
Will you commit to act swiftly to tackle the regulatory red tape that is currently preventing NPs from providing the most efficient care to their patients?
The Ontario Liberal Party is committed to expanding the scope of practice for Nurse Practitioners by enabling them to order a full range of x-ray, CT scans, ultrasounds, MRIs, and other diagnostic procedures.
Will your government commit to review health human resource policies and funding to ensure that healthcare employers choose the right provider based on patient need, clinical effectiveness and best outcomes for patients?
Yes.
