NORTH BAY – Valentines Day issues of the heart do not all have to be romantic, as proven by the Aids Committee of North Bay and Area (ACNBA) on Feb. 14 with the opening of a new women’s health clinic.

The clinic, located in the ACNBA offices on Main Street West offers health care services to women who do not have a primary health care provider.

“The clinic will be a great resource for those in the community who have nowhere else to go,” said ACNBA executive director Stacey Mayhall. “This is a pilot project, targeted to marginalized women and our existing clients.”

While only 20 patients are being accepted during the pilot phase of the clinic, organizers are hopeful they will be able to prove sufficient need for future funding to enlarge the clinic’s services.

“This is an exciting day when we can start to address the gap in services for at-risk women,” said nurse practitioner Keri McGuire-Trahan, adding the clinic, which accepts women referred by the North East Women’s Health Alliance (NEWHA), will offer a full range of services, including baby checks.

The clinic will be open every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon, by appointment only, and will care for women through a client-centred approach that supports women in achieving their own health and wellness goals.

The clinic has been outfitted thanks to a “generous donation from the Lions Club,” said Mayhall, “and has back-up support from the Main Street Clinic.”
