Sonia is also part of a group of Nurse Practitioners across the country who are in the process of developing national competencies and guidelines for Nephrology Nurse Practitioners.
As the Nurse Practitioner working in the RAAM (Rapid Access Addiction Medicine) Clinic at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) in Barrie, my role is centered on providing timely, compassionate, and evidence-based care to individuals struggling with substance use disorders. As the only Nurse Practitioner and provider in the RAAM clinic, my role extends to supporting not only our Barrie location for in person visits, but also our RAAM satellites in Wasaga Beach, Midland and Orillia via Virtual Platforms. We are the North Simcoe Muskoka regional RAAM program and currently I am their only provider.
The RAAM clinic model is designed to remove traditional barriers to addiction treatment. Patients can access care quickly—often without a referral or long wait times—which is critical when someone is ready to seek help. My role supports patients by meeting them at that pivotal moment and providing assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning.
I conduct comprehensive health assessments that address not only substance use but also co-occurring mental health conditions, chronic illnesses, trauma history, and social determinants of health. I can initiate and manage medications for opioid use disorder (such as buprenorphine/naloxone), alcohol use disorder, and other substance-related conditions. In addition, I provide harm reduction education, connecting with withdrawal management support, and relapse prevention planning tailored to each individual’s needs.
Beyond prescribing and clinical management, a significant part of my role involves therapeutic engagement. I work to build trusting, non-judgmental relationships with patients who may have experienced stigma within the healthcare system. I try to empower patients to set achievable goals and take an active role in their recovery.
My position also contributes to the broader healthcare system. By providing rapid access to addiction treatment, we help reduce emergency department visits, hospital admissions, and complications such as overdose or untreated infections. Early intervention improves patient outcomes while trying to alleviating pressure on acute care services. As an NP, I practice autonomously within my scope while collaborating closely with nurses, addiction counselors, pharmacists, and community agencies to ensure coordinated, wraparound care.
Additionally, I support continuity of care by linking patients to primary care providers, mental health services, counseling, housing resources, and community-based programs. This integrated approach strengthens the healthcare system by promoting long-term stability rather than episodic crisis care.
Working at RVH’s RAAM clinic allows me to bridge gaps between acute care and community services, advocate for vulnerable populations, and contribute to a more accessible, equitable, and responsive healthcare system. Ultimately, my role supports not only individual recovery journeys but also the overall health and resilience of our community.
