As a Nurse Practitioner, my practice is rooted in supporting patients from vulnerable populations—many of whom are Indigenous, houseless or underhoused, substance involved, living with complex mental health disorders, or managing stigmatized infections such as HIV. Over the past five years, I have honed my ability to make health care accessible to those who have lost faith in the system. By being unapologetically authentic, I work to rebuild trust and create safe spaces where patients can receive care that meets them exactly where they are.
My experience in HIV care demonstrates that Nurse Practitioners can effectively manage this condition even in communities with limited access to specialty services. In doing so, I have shown that primary care delivered through a lens of cultural safety, dignity, and flexibility can restore confidence in health care and improve outcomes for marginalized populations.
